Early Music Michigan was founded as The Michigan Bach Collegium in 1996 as a self-governing, non-profit organization by a group of singers and instrumental performers. The principal ensemble is a mixed choir of twenty-four singers, assisted by a body of professional instrumentalists under the leadership of the artistic director. Read more about the ensemble here.
The name of the organization was changed to "Early Music Michigan" so that our mission and organization might be made clear to the public. Our organization generally considers music of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras to be "early" music, and we focus our repertoire on these areas. A primary focus and on-going goal is to use period instruments exclusively in our performances. "Period" instruments refer to restored or faithful reproductions of the instruments for which the music was originally written.
Our presentations take on a variety of formats: performances, lectures, educational workshops, multimedia presentations, theatrical productions, reconstructions of original performances, and presentations with an evening of food and entertainment. Our venues vary widely, with presentations in concert halls, churches, hidden chapels, and food and entertainment venues. Read more about our current season here.
